Masterplan for the Dumq (Oman) Industrial Area.
The plan provides guidance on the design and layout of an industrial subdivision, is a significant opportunity to improve the environmental, social and economic sustainability of an industrial area. The form of the subdivision has a substantial impact on key factors those the framework of industrial development is defined with.In compliance with the proposed master plan for the Duqm Industrial Area, and based on the principals of Industrial ecology, the current report demonstrates the local structural plan considered for the different subdivisions of the area, and discusses the potentials of economic and sustainable orders which could be practiced in the context of this proposal. The ultimate goal is to provide a sustainable platform in which economical, ecological, and social elements could be mingled properly with one another. For serving this goal, the current proposal introduces variety of tools and relationships functioning mutually in a well-connected, flexible and efficient framework. A sustainable form for the EIP could be achieved only if involved elements of industrial development are defined clearly, and proper conceptual and physical links connect them in viable manners. Accordingly, in order to accomplish the mentioned objectives in the Duqm’s structure plan, and reach an optimal form, a holistic, multi-scale and multi-element approach has been adopted. To apply sustainable principals to the structure plan, compatible strategies should be assigned to the economical, ecological, and social elements. From overlapping these elements, and interpreting their related strategies physical organs emerges (e.g. offices, common facilities, supportive services, etc.), and with placing these organs in different orders of integration, eventually urban nodes are formed. Considering the size and consisting functional districts of the Duqm area, and based on the multi-scale approach, in order to create a flexible and efficient metabolism, a clear set of hierarchy -in terms of function and size- should rule to the resulted nodes. The final step is to provide an optimal connectivity between the different ranks of nodes through a hierarchic and efficient transportation network, and by designing proper layouts; in other words creating the concept plan.
