The research promotes innovation in slum upgrading programmes through multidisciplinary experimentation of long-term actions aimed at mitigating the health and hygiene unsafeness of the Chamanculo neighbourhood in Maputo, combining sanitation and environmental projects in a holistic and systemic manner. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has highlighted an already existing vulnerability of the local population, whose main causes are the lack of health services, inadequate urban infrastructure (roads and public spaces), overcrowding and inadequate waste management systems. HANDS aims to set up a “Social Laboratory” dedicated to the production of Polichina liquid sanitiser, promote better waste management and an appropriate energy production model at both urban and household scale, and transfer technological skills to local stakeholders.D
